My BEHRINGER ADA8200 Review – Is this the audio interface for you?

Does the BEHRINGER ADA8200 hold up to other audio interfaces?

If you are in the audio mixing and recording world, there can be nothing better than the Behringer ADA8200. Whether you are a beginner trying to make some fantastic music or a professional mixing and recording music for years, the Behringer is just the interface you need. It promises some of the most robust features that you would expect in a high-end A/D and D/A interface.

The interface is easy to use and that is why it is immensely popular with the amateurs. Moreover, the accuracy that the interface provides is unmatched and helps the music makers to make the best of their talents. This accuracy is, in fact, the prime differentiator between an inferior interface and a high-quality professional interface like this one.

From the outside, it looks pretty much like it’s predecessor, the ADA2000 but inside it is a clear upgrade to it. It has been fine-tuned for improvements and has been improved in several ways to make it the perfect choice for musicians and sound engineers. The purpose of this interface is to ensure that recording and mixing do not look like some rocket science along with ensuring that the recordings are of the highest quality and standards.

In this Behringer ADA2800 review, I will walk you through the technical specifications of this product, the pros, and cons along with other aspects that you must know before making a purchase decision.

BEHRINGER ADA8200 Features Explained

Barring the weight and item dimensions of the ADA8200 every other technical specification is a reason behind the amazing features that the ADA8200 is known for. The ADA8200 is packed with amazing upgrades that fill the heart of every music technician and sound engineer with awe and admiration for this amazing product. Let us look at the features in detail.

BEHRINGER ADA8200 specs

Appearance

The visible difference between this and its previous version is the stylish red front panel and some changes in the appearance of gain knobs. This model looks stylish and sleek and something every recording engineer would love to have.

Power Supply Module

One other change I saw was the change in the power supply. The older version has a linear power supply because of which it used to get too hot and as such was a major cause of failure quite often. This has now been changed to a robust universal switched-type power supply system that runs cooler than the earlier version. This has also lowered its power consumption from 25W to 15W which is a great cost saver for you.

Interface

The best feature of this product is its simplicity and ease of usage. You can be a layman and still record the highest quality music using this interface. The 8-channel A/D & D/A interface is super smooth and works perfectly with almost any other mixing technology and the environment.

Frequency Range & Converters

The ADA8200 has a wide operating range of frequencies between 10 Hz and 20 Hz. The converters can convert the signals at either 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. The converter in itself is a high-end Cirrus logic 24-bit converter that is one of the best in terms of signal integrity. The latency in the converter is quite low at 0.55 ms which is pretty awesome for a converter. Such a wide range of working frequency and such high-quality converters only mean you can convert and record any kind of music with ease.

Phantom Power Feature

Then you have the familiar phantom power feature which can be switched on for all 8 channels with the push of a button that’s on the right side of the front panel. While reviewing the model I found the phantom power voltage was comparatively much lower at 46.5V and it did not really drop that much even when all the eight channels were plugged into the microphones.

Input Channels and Formats

All of the 8 input channels are equipped with a quarter-inch TRS socket and an XLR that makes it possible for the unit to receive digitally balanced line-level and mic level units respectively. Phantom power is available on the XLR as expected. Both the input formats are active and what is being fed to the mic-preamplifier is the mix of the mic-level and the line-level inputs. That makes for a flawless recording of inputs and of the highest quality.

Output

The line outputs are ensured via the XLRs on the rear panel of the system that provides for a +16dBu output for a full-level 0dBFS ADAT input. Though this is lower than the norm but still gives you the most desired output. The ultragain demonstrates loads of specifications that are much improved than every previous model, though not an improvement too huge to be excited about. The total dynamic range capacity sits at a massive 98dB which is quite good in terms of the required output.

Now that we have covered most of the features of the Behringer ADA8200, you must have got an idea of why this product has become so popular in the music-making industry. Let us quickly point out some of the Pros and Cons of this product.

BEHRINGER ADA8200 vs TASCAM US-4X4 Interface

As an alternative to the Behringer, you may sure consider the TASCAM US-4X4 Interface. This is a competent product with a few added advantages. It comes with a 20 ft mic cable that makes you facilitate your recording or sound recording projects seamlessly. This device stands out in its user-friendliness. It is a little better than the ADA8200 in terms of ease of usage.

It connects seamlessly to modern tablets, smartphones, laptops, and other similar devices that may be needed to be tracked. The interface is pretty intuitive and as such is a hot favorite among the amateurs. The best part about this interface is its plug and play feature. You can plug it to any keyboard, drum machine, etc and can start recording almost instantly. The resulting audio quality is of the highest quality, clean and provides for a fulfilling sound experience.

However, when it comes to professionals, the ADA2800 is the sound recorder that is preferred. That is because the TASCAM does not pertain to the explicit demands of professionals. While TASCAM is the interface for many amateurs, the ADA8200, is the interface for the professionals. However, this largely depends on personal aspirations and expectations and may vary from person to person.

The Final Verdict on the ADA8200

This product is exactly like the younger brother OF ADA8000. It is practically similar to that of ADA8000 in every way possible. The I/O, the controls, the operation as well as the restrictions – everything is exactly similar to that of ADA8000. There are certain improvements as well but these improvements are merely technical improvements that do not make much of a difference in the performance. However, I found that the model is pretty good on the job and has passed many such tests during the review successfully. There are a lot of issues from the previous model that has been addressed and removed and are better in the ADA8200. Its many robust features are a clear differentiator and stand out and apart in the crowd.

The marketing tagline for this product should be “The King Rules” – for it surely is the king and is certainly a ruler in this segment of recording and mixing devices available. So, the bottom line – if you are looking for a convenient, work-a-day interface that has an 8-channel preamp and is also not so heavy on your pocket – the ADA3200 is the device you are looking for. It may not be an extra special and a premium kind of an interface but it will surely be perfect for the job. Moreover, the many features of this interface that you are getting are an added advantage that will not let you down in your projects.
